ABOUT DOCU-TYPE ADMINISTRATIVE &
WEB DESIGN SERVICES: Docu-Type Administrative & Web Design Services, located in Caledon,
Ontario, was founded by Janice Byer in 1998. The home-based company provides
professional assistance to busy small business owners, specializing in
Virtual Assistance and Website Design. (Click here for a listing of all services available). Their professional services
allow entrepreneurs to outsource their administrative tasks, freeing up
more time to generate revenue. Docu-Type also takes great pride in helping
others succeed. They produce a bi-monthly online newsletter, Virtual
TidBits, which includes tips, links, and articles to assist the netpreneur.
They also provide 'been there, done that' business related articles to
both online and print publications. They also have included several pages
on their website with a sole purpose of providing more information (see
below).
FOUNDER'S EXPERIENCE: After high
school, Ms. Byer was unsure as to what was her next step. So, she spent
one year living with friends in the small town of Prince Rupert, BC. At
the end of that year, she returned to Ontario and enrolled in Sheridan
College's Micro Computer Management program. After graduating from this
two year course, she began her career. Her first position entailed being
in charge of the payroll for a large Temporary agency in Brampton,
Ontario.
From there she moved onto a large
automotive aftermarket company, where she spent the next ten years of her
career. She started at this company as the Receptionist and rose through
several other positions during her employment with them. From Accounting
to Marketing to Purchasing, she became experienced in most aspects of
running a large company. Eventually though, this company would fall victim
to a merger with a larger corporation, at which time, most of the loyal
employees, and their positions, became redundant.
Straight from this large corporation,
Ms. Byer took over as the office manager of a small lawn care company
owned by her father. During her time with his company, she was vital in
the day-to-day operations of the company, including everything from
answering customer inquiries to designing the company's advertising and
marketing material. Not to mention the experience of running a small
business.
But this too would end, as her father
decided to retire in the fall of 1998. It was at that point that Ms. Byer
realized being a small business owner was her destiny. She researched what
she would like to offer and to who and the rest, as they say, is history.
In an effort to enhance her abilities
of running a small business and to ensure the success of the business, Ms.
Byer applied and was accepted into the Self-Employment Assistance (SEA)
Program, sponsored by HRDC. The 10-week course involved in-class
instruction from successful business owners and an abundance of hands on
training for running a small business. The final result of the course was
an extensive business plan which could be used to further fund the small
business endeavor. The support from the instructors then continued for
the remainder of the year.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY: Janice
Byer founded Docu-Type in the summer of 1998. In September of that same
year, the company's website was put online. From that time until April of
1999, the company 'tested the waters' to see if the services and expertise
that Ms. Byer had to offer could sustain itself. It was clear, after much
research, that her passion to be successful and the need to offer small
business owners an option for their staffing requirements could make this
business a force to be reckoned with. After developing an extensive
business plan, the company was ready to take on clients and officially
launched in May of 1999.
